David Schall Theatre

This project involved creating an accurate and detailed lighting plot for the David Schall Theatre to support the production of Trouble in Mind. After discovering inaccuracies in the original plot, I took the initiative to remeasure the space and build a new lighting plot in Vectorworks, ensuring the production team had reliable technical documentation.

Project Overview

I intially joined the production of Trouble in Mind as an Assistant Lighting Designer. Early in the process, I reviewed the provided lighting plot for the David Schall Theatre and found that it lacked critical details and contained inaccuracies that could complicate lighting setup and cue planning. Recognizing the potential risks this posed for the production, I proactively offered to create a new, precise lighting plot. Several weeks before tech week, I conducted a site visit to the theatre and performed a detailed measurement survey. Using a Digital Laser Distance Meter and the measurement app on my Apple iPhone, I gathered accurate dimensions of the space, including architectural features and key lighting positions. I first captured this data in hand-drawn sketches and notes, then translated it into a fully detailed Vectorworks drawing. The new plot provided the lighting designer and technical crew with a reliable reference that significantly improved clarity and efficiency during the lighting load-in and focus sessions. This experience also reinforced the importance of accurate documentation and expanded my skills in site surveying and drafting for live production environments.

Role & Responsibilities

Conducting the site survey, gathering accurate venue measurements, and creating a new, detailed lighting plot in Vectorworks. I also collaborated with the Lighting Designer and technical team to ensure the revised plot met the production’s needs.

Workflow

The project began with an initial review of the existing lighting plot and identification of its inaccuracies. I scheduled and conducted a site visit to the David Schall Theatre, using a Digital Laser Distance Meter and mobile measurement tools to capture the theatre’s dimensions. After manually documenting the data, I imported it into Vectorworks and created a precise and clearly labeled lighting plot. I refined the drawing in collaboration with the Lighting Designer and provided the final version to the technical team in preparation for tech week.
